How to choose top quality carry on luggage

The best cabin luggage is what suits your travel style. Everyone has individual requirements and there is no one size fits all when it comes to cabin luggage. While some prefer the lightest carry on case to take advantage of weight restrictions, others are not as concerned and prefer luggage that offers more features such as specific laptop storage areas or built in charges for phones or other devices.

JULY makes different versions of its popular range of high end travel luggage and each case is hard shell design made from German Polycarbonate.

This JULY luggage review covers the following:

  • JULY Carry On Light
  • JULY Carry On
  • JULY Carry On Pro

What makes a good carry on bag?

Apart from value for money, what we look for when comparing carry on is if it will last. We travel extensively both within Australia and abroad and need bags that are practical and fit for purpose.

The main requirements we take into consideration for carry on luggage are as follows:

  • Confirmation that the luggage is approved for airline overhead locker storage
  • Features of the luggage that make it stand out
  • Internal space
  • Internal compartments and zippered areas
  • Weight of the luggage when empty
  • 2 or 4 wheel design
  • If it is easy to manoeuvre
  • Hard shell or soft sided
  • Construction material
  • Length of handle
  • Locking mechanism
  • Warranty

JULY luggage review of the lightest carry on in the world

We start our review of the JULY Luggage range with the Carry On Light. This no nonsense carry on may not have the features of other luggage in the JULY Range of carry on but what makes it stand out is that it only weighs 1.8kg when empty. Making it the world’s lightest carry on luggage.

If you need to fly within strict airline weight limits, then you won’t find a case as light as the JULY Carry On Light. It is the smallest of our JULY luggage review but still packs a punch with its strong polycarbonate construction, quality Japanese YKK zippers, integrated TSA lock and dual spinner wheels.

We have the shadow lavender colour version of this case and although the internal volume at 32 litres is less than others in the review, it is surprising how much it will hold. The bonus is it’s so light and is super easy to manoeuvre and load into overhead airline storage compartments.

We took this case as our carry on during a visit to Hobart Tasmania and stayed within our carry on limit of 7kg. The airline we flew with (Jetstar) have a reputation for enforcing weight limits on flights and as the case is so light when empty it meant we could take more onboard without worrying about exceeding the limit.

The lightest case in our JULY luggage review.

Step up to the next level carry on with the JULY Carry On

Next on our JULY luggage review is the Carry On. This carry on is larger but still within the airline approved size. It has internal volume of 42 litres and weighs 3.4kg when empty.

A standout feature of this carry on is the removable power bank which has standard USB ports and USB-C port so you can keep your phones, tablets and other devices charged during those long layovers or at your destination.

It also features a hidden laundry bag and a unique compression system fastened by straps to help fit more in the bag. The internal nylon lining is water-resistant and stain-proof.

We took this carry on with us on our trip to Vietnam in 2022 and the built in power bank came in very handy during our long layover in Singapore. Gone are the days when you need to rummage through your luggage searching for the charger as it is attached under the handle of the JULY Carry On.

Ultimate carry on for frequent flyers

The last case of our JULY luggage review is the Carry On Pro. This is our personal favourite of the JULY bags and the case that will be coming with us on all our future travels. It is also approved by all major airlines to comply with carry on size.

The standout feature of this travel luggage is the detachable external sleeve. The sleeve measures 38cm x 28cm and will hold up to a 16 inch laptop. While designed to house a laptop for easy access when travelling it can also hold documents or whatever you wish. The sleeve is padded inside to protect your equipment and has a zippered storage section. The external of the sleeve also has a zippered section which would be great for travel documents or passports.

It is securely fastened to the exterior of the carry on with a strong attachment system and is easily released by lifting the release strap inside the zippered area. It is evident a lot of thought has gone into the design of the sleeve and for those that travel a lot will be super useful especially when passing through airport security areas that require you to remove electronic devices.

The uses of the removable sleeve are endless, and it is no wonder the Carry On Pro is a top selling carry on luggage case.

Other features of the case are the internal compressions system as well as the hidden laundry bag and ample storage area with zippered compartments. It too has the removable power bank with USB and USB-C ports.

The Carry On Pro weighs 3.6kg when empty and has the same smooth glide dual spinner wheels as the other cases in this JULY luggage review.
