Dometic CFX355IM - Portable Fridge/Freezer 53L with Ice Maker

720 (L) x 455 (W) x 480 (H)mm

Enjoy reliably fresh food and cold drinks thanks to Dometic’s market leading VMSO3 variable-speed compressor cooling technology. Its optimised software ensures superior cooling, freezing and energy efficiency. The CFX3 features durable and lightweight fender frames to protect the fridge/freezer, making it ideal for use in harsh outdoor environments. Strong, spring-loaded aluminium handles make it easy to lift and carry. Adjust the cooling temperature of your CFX3 on the TFT display screen or download the CFX3 app and roam free without worry.

The CFX3 is the third generation of Dometic Waeco portable camping fridges. All CFX3’s have the same footprint as the old CFX’s but with added capacity. To optimise space the compressor has been moved to the back of the fridge. This also improves the weight distribution on a fridge slide as the majority of the fridges weight is at the back of the slide.

The entire CFX3 range feature easy to remove lids. The larger models (CFX355, CFX355IM, CFX375DZ & CFX395DZ) have a reversable lid while the smaller models (CFX335 & CFX345) open from the front.

The new model CFX355IM is replacing the old Dometic Waeco CFX65W model.

Optimised VMSO3 Compressor

All CFX3’s feature a genuine Waeco VMS03 compressor. The VMS03 compressor has motor speed optimization that has the ability to change speed in order to adapt to the environment. This allows you to save power especially in hot climates.  The compressor also features a softer start up with a higher maximum power draw to increase the longevity of the fridge/freezer.

Capacity

The fridge stores an incredible amount of fresh food and drinks. The CFX3 eliminates the dairy compartment, which means more room for all your favorite foods. Choose how you organize the space with a removable wire divider and enjoy a more even distribution of cool air with the extended evaporator, now on all inner walls of the unit. This takes the load off the compressor to save power.

Digital Display

The CFX3 series features an easy to read high-resolution color display panel with characters which states the temperature and status of the cooler. Several protection systems are built into the display, including a scratch-resistant cover and IP65 rated housing to protect against dust and water splashes, so you can feel confident wherever you go. The upgraded USB port is now located in the display panel for a faster and more ergonomic way to charge your portable devices. The intuitive user-interface displays the voltage, Bluetooth/WiFi connection status and temperature in colorful graphics. The operating settings of your cooler can be adjusted at the press of a button with a simple menu.

What Are The Main Differences Between The Old CFX Models and The New CFX3 Range?

This range introduces a new rugged design including an XOS frame for protection, Al alloy hinges and aluminium handles. They also feature a new standardised user interface, faster USB charging and Variable Motor Speed Optimization ‘VMSO3’ which optimises performance vs energy consumption. Due to their low power consumption using DC power, these fridges are great to pair with solar for the ultimate off-grid setup. The CFX355IM also features an icemaker which is an industry first!

Q & A

  • Can I take off the lid on the CFX3 fridges?

Yes, all the CFX3's have a removable lid.

    The larger models CFX355, CFX355IM, CFX375DZ & CFX395DZ also have a reversible lids.

  • What compressor is in the CFX3 fridges?

The entire CFX3 range features a genuine Waeco VMS03 compressor. The VMS03 compressor has motor speed optimization that has the ability to change speed in order to adapt to the environment. This allows you to save power especially in hot climates. The compressor also features a softer start up with a higher maximum power draw to increase the longevity of the fridge/freezer.

  • How is the evaporator different in the CFX3's compared to other portable fridge/freezers?

The evaporator plate in the CFX3's are installation around the entirety of the fridge for an even cooling distribution and temperature throughout the fridge/freezer.

  • How does the CFX3 55IM icemaker work?

    Hey, great question!

The CFX3 55IM comes with two custom silicon ice trays with secure lids to ensure to leakage in your fridge. You will just need to fill the trays up with water and place them the ice department of the fridge.

If you are not interested in creating ice, you can use the department to freeze smaller items.

  • What size battery should I have to power a portable fridge?

First, you will need to determine how much power your portable fridge will consume on average per hour under certain ambient conditions; please see the Product Specification Tab of the product where we provide this information. Additionally, you will need to know the size of your battery in amp-hours.

When you have these number, you can calculate the approximate run time in hours by dividing the size of the battery by that average consumption figure.

    Some examples:

If it is stated consumption is 1 amp per hour average, multiple that by 24 hours (equals 24 Amp hours per day).

You should understand that you never get the full amount of amp-hours from a battery. As a good rule of thumb, you should use 80% for a Lithium Battery and 50% of an AGM/GEL (lead acid) battery.

So, for a 100 Amp hours deep cycle lithium battery, we can assume 80 amp-hours of usable power.

If we are looking at a refrigerator that have an average consumption of 1 amp per hour, and it is the only appliance running from a 100 amp-hour battery. You should be able to run the refrigerator for around 80 hours before recharging is needed.

  • How much solar do I need to power my portable fridge?

The panel should be of a suitable size to meet requirements of the refrigerator and any other appliance running from the battery. It's best to use the solar panel to charge a battery, as opposed to running the fridge directly from the solar panel as voltage will drop if clouds come overhead for instance. The battery means your refrigerator keeps running even if the voltage output of the solar panel drops severely due to cloud cover.

A good rule of thumb to prevent inadequacies with power supply is to have a solar panel large enough to provide enough daily power to run your refrigerator and have battery storage of an extra 2/3 on hand. So, if your refrigerator (or any other appliance) will consume 30 amp-hours per day, you should have battery storage of 90 amp-hours capacity and a solar panel of around 80 watts or greater capacity to ensure you will not have problems.

It is advised to go a little higher in specification than your needs. However, a popular solar panel size to charge your batteries to run camping fridges is around 120 - 160 watts.

  • Will the fridge drain my car battery?

Your car starter battery will need a certain voltage level to crank over. If you are running the fridge direct from your cranking battery, most user manuals, including Dometic, recommend switching your portable fridge on to Medium or High voltage setting.

By changing this setting you are telling the fridge to cut out (stop drawing power) at a predetermined voltage level. See table below:

Example - Dometic CFX3's Voltage settings:

To avoid battery draining of your starter battery we recommend choosing the high setting.

If you are connected to a house (Auxiliary) battery then you are fine to choose the low setting.

  • I am considering buying a solar blanket for my camping trips - can I run my camping fridge directly from the solar blanket?

    Hi there,

Great question! However, unfortunately no, you will not be able to run your camping fridge directly with a solar blanket.

A battery will be required to be used to provide a continuous power supply for the fridge. You will need to plug the portable fridge/freezer into the battery and plug the battery into the solar panel/blanket.

The solar panel/blanket on its own is unable to provide stable and constant power to your portable fridge/freezer, which is required to maintain your pre-set temperature.

  • How much ventilation do I need surrounding the fridge when it is operating?

To ensure that your portable fridge/freezer are not overheating which will result in a high power consumption that leads to poor performance and efficiency, it is important to make sure that the fridge/freezer is getting the right amount of ventilation.

We would always recommend at least a 100mm buffering perimeter around the fridge when it is being stored in an enclosure. However, many manufacturers will generally advise a 200mm buffering gap around the fridge vent for the best possible performance.

Additionally, we highly recommend to regularly clean the air inlet and outlet vent of the fridge/freezer. This will prevent dust from creating a blockage.

  • What size portable fridge/freezer should I purchase?

Dometic portable fridge/freezers comes in a wide range of sizes. When deciding on a portable fridge/freezer, it is important to remember that the larger size will require more power, it is also heavier and will take up more space. While if you choose a smaller more compact fridge/freezer, it may be hard to fit your required food for your family during your days away.

We recommend to to choose the size that matches your required storage capacity for food, your travel habits, and weight requirements.

  • What is the difference between the Dometic CFX3 portable fridges and the Dometic CFF portable fridge models?

The Dometic CFX3 range is the top of the line in portable camping fridges, they include some of these features which set it apart:

    • roll around evaporator design on all inner walls of the fridge (this takes the load off the compressor to save power) - removeable lids
    • drop down handles (not fixed)
    • Wifi / Bluetooth enabled + USB outlets
    • A VMS03 in-house compressor, which is variable speed and has a soft start up to maximise efficiency

The Dometic CFF fridge range is less spec'd (they do not include the above listed features) and are cheaper. The CFF models uses a common compressor. So overall the CFF models have slightly less bells n whistles than the CFX3 range, but are still an excellent high quality & efficient camping fridge option from a leading global brand in the RV/Outdoor market.

Both ranges are very popular with Australian travellers, with the CFX3 range being slightly more popular with our customers.
